RCMP has notified Alberta Health Services (AHS) of seven stores which are the subject of an ongoing investigation into the unlawful livestock dealing and the illegal slaughter of sheep and goats in Southern Alberta.

According to Mounties the investigation was launched by the RCMP Livestock Unit in November 2023 and, 'involves a number of individuals, many rural locations, and a number of stores in the City of Calgary.'

"As the investigation is ongoing, no further details will be released at this time," police added.

On Friday, April 19, AHS noted that several Calgary stores had been ordered to close due to uninspected meat being purchased and sold at the stores. The closure orders are in effect for:

  • Shawdesi Foods & Catering, 55 Westwinds Crescent Northeast, Unit 127

  • Shawdesi Bazaar, 55 Westwinds Crescent Northeast, Unit 131

  • Bismillah Meat & Grocery, 4250 109 Avenue Northeast, Unit 4110

  • Mustafa Madani Halal Meat and Groceries, 7 Westwinds Crescent Northeast, Unit 109

  • Maher Fresh Halal Meat, 3517 17 Avenue Southeast, Unit 101

  • Cadalow Halal Meat / Alta Halal Meat, 6426 36 Street Northeast, Units 150 & 155

According to the closure orders for the establishments the purchasing and selling of unlicensed meat is in contravention of the Food Regulation Act.

The owners of the establishments are mandated to, '... Provide evidence to the satisfaction of an Alberta Health Services, Executive Officer that all prepared, processed and displayed food is from an approved source and provide a list of all food suppliers.'

"Provide a copy of all the receipts/invoices for all meat products from the past 3 months to the Executive Office [and] clean and sanitize all food contact surfaces including all equipment used within the facility."

Previous Health inspection reports show several of the establishments had multiple critical violations cited over the past several years.
