Last Sunday, four Airdrie athletes participated in this year's Alberta Senior Bowl.

The South Team beat the North Team 32-2. It was the first time the South Team won in the last four meetings.

It all happened in Calgary at the Shouldice Athletic Park, Encana Dome. January 4-6 were install camps for both teams.

The four Airdrie athletes included:

  • Abdul-Hameed Alawiye - Offensive Lineman - W.H. Croxford Cavaliers
  • Wes Bromley - Linebacker - George McDougall Mustangs
  • Jordan Southern - Denfensive Lineman - George McDougall Mustangs
  • Tyrell Hofland - Receiver - George McDougall Mustangs

George McDougall Mustangs Head Coach Chris Glass attended the game and is proud of how well the athletes performed.

"Some of the best football is being played in our city and it was clear that our guys had a big impact on the game."

Glass does believe this will become the new normal for Airdrie to have athletes well represented at the Senior Bowl.

"The level of football that's being played in the city is starting to be recognized provincially."

Last season's standings prove the coach's statement as the George McDougall Mustangs won the Rocky View Schools Championship while W.H. Croxford finished fourth.

The Senior Bowl is made up of the top 40 grade 12 athletes who tried out for the north or south team. The Airdrie area is part of the south team's players.

The game is considered a final showcase for those who might want to move on and play at the next level.

Last year, Airdrie had nine athletes at the Senior Bowl. Those included:

  • Paul Condon - George McDougall - Runningback
  • Dawson Jensen – George McDougal - Linebacker
  • Robert Lasebnik – George McDougal - Kicker/Punter
