A car that was reported stolen out of Didsbury two years ago was subsequently stopped during a traffic stop in Northern Alberta by Mounties, resulting in a seizure of $10,000 worth of narcotics.

According to Mounties, last Thursday, Whitecourt RCMP was conducting roving patrols when a driver on Highway 43 was observed not wearing a seatbelt.

"A roadside stop was conducted and the Alberta RCMP Traffic Unit officer noted that the VIN did not match the registration and insurance documents."

52-year-old Amanda Lee McVittie of Calgary was arrested and a search of the vehicle incidental to the arrest revealed the following items: 156 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 8.5 grams of suspected cocaine, seven grams of suspected hash, and break-in tools.

The woman was charged with two counts of Possession for Trafficking, Possession of stolen property over $5000, Possession of break-in tools, Breach of undertaking, as well as four counts of Traffic Safety Act tickets.

"McVittie was released on conditions and is to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt on June 11."

One day later, RCMP was performing speed enforcement on a Highway near Whitecourt when a vehicle was observed travelling at 146 km/h in a 110km/h zone.

"An Alberta RCMP Traffic Unit conducted a roadside stop and observed the windows being rolled down, letting a cloud of cannabis-tinted smoke waft out, while hand-rolled cigarettes were being thrown."

The officer noted drugs within the vehicle, resulting in the arrest of six people.

The vehicle was searched and the following items, valued at over $90,000, were seized including: 1.2 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, 178.8 grams of suspected cocaine, 2,938 millilitres of codeine syrup, 78 bars of alprazolam, as well as a loaded prohibited handgun. 

19-year-old Tommy Kayfay and 21-year-old Chino Guiawan, both residents of Edmonton were arrested, along with two Yellow Knife residents; 32-year-old Bradley Mercredi and 33-year-old April Sayine. The individuals were charged with four counts of Possession for the purpose of trafficking, five counts of Firearm-related offences and two counts of Transporting Cannabis/Alcohol within easy access of occupant.

The other individuals arrested, were 19-year-old Gulied Ahmed Umara resident of Edmonton, who was charged with four counts of Possession for the purpose of trafficking, six counts of Firearm-related offences, as well as two counts Transporting Cannabis/Alcohol within easy access of occupant, and two counts of Breach of release order. Umar also had provincial sanctions due to impaired driving and speeding. 

The other Edmonton resident, 28-year-old Suleiman Mohamed Abdow was charged with four counts of Possession for the purpose of trafficking, six counts of Firearm-related offences, two counts of  Transporting Cannabis/Alcohol within easy access of occupant, one count of Possession of an identity document not belonging to them, Obstruct police officer, Identity fraud, and Breach of release order.

Abdow, Umar, Guiawan, Kayfay, Mercredi, and Sayine were brought before a justice of the peace. Abdow and Umar were remanded into custody, to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt on May 14. Guiawan, Kayfay, Mercredi, and Sayine were released on condition, to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt on May 14.

Sgt. Greg Anderson NCO i/c of the Alberta RCMP Traffic – Whitecourt Unit said that the unit is always hard at work not only enforcing traffic-related laws but also making sure that illegal goods transiting through the area are seized and that the people found with them are dealt with according to the applicable laws.
