If you have plans for Sunday, just know the time is jumping ahead overnight. On Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m., we will be jumping one hour ahead for Daylight Savings Time.

With time moving forward, there are a few things you can do to prepare both your gadgets and your house for spring. Airdrie Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Public Education, James Kostuk, stated while changing clocks, you should also check your smoke alarms.

"Turn clocks ahead in the spring, it's a time to change your batteries in smoke alarms if need be."

According to Kostuk, smoke alarms save lives and are the first line of defence.

"We see that throughout our community and across North America, they cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half."

It's important to remember that smoke alarms are effective for 10 years and should be replaced once a decade passes.

When it comes to various household and personal devices, ensuring your computer or laptop stays synchronized with the correct time during the winter season is crucial. Make sure the 'Adjust for daylight saving time automatically' toggle is enabled in your system settings. Similarly, for mobile phones, utilize the 'set time' automatic feature to avoid the hassle of adjusting your phone during the night.

For those who are worried about oversleeping, it's best to set your alarm slightly early (30 minutes) and get to bed a bit earlier the night before, if possible.

The first country to officially adopt Daylight Savings Time into law was Germany in 1916.

While Alberta did explore the possibility of switching permanently to Daylight Savings Time in 2021 in a referendum question, the votes in favour of keeping the system as is, were slim. 50.2 per cent of those who voted, voted no, while 49.8 per cent voted in favour of it.
