Air 106.1 FM is a radio station built specifically for the people of Airdrie and the entire Rocky View County region. The combination of great music and great communities makes for great radio!
Check out some of the good things that have been going on recently.
In the age of the internet, we need librarians more than ever.
The library has become much more than it used to be, and the librarian is someone who can help you navigate our world in books, on computers, and through the internet. You can come to the library and ask for things, ask for help, so we can find you accurate information. We even have a program called one-to-one, where you book a half hour with a qualified librarian who will sit down with you and help you with whatever your information request is.
The global connection means more books are available to more people. Were able to have an online system and share three million items. You can go on at night on our website, link to the track website, and search through three million items. You can get almost anything you want. Its delivered here, we call you and you pick it up.
People come to the library for different reasons. We have some space for gathering, and people really want that in this day and age. The diversity of the people who regularly meet at the library is wonderful.
From my chat with Janine I realized that the Public Library is often sold short. The misperception is that its full of dusty books and that you must be quiet, but thats just not true. Its very much alive. Its colourful and full of people bettering themselves through literature and knowledge. Janine is quick to remind me that it isnt her library, its the communitys library. Everybody has a right here. Even if you dont want to have a card and take out items, come. You can read here, you can study here, you can work here. Its a great place to be.
Jeff and Rob (behind the camera) met up with the amazing staff at Airdrie's Little Gym this afternoon for some lunch at Nathan's Famous. Deb entered the @Work Network contest online at discoverairdrie.com and won it for her group! They sure work up an appetite chasing after those little "beasties" all day!
Congrats to Deb and all those at the Little Gym! Will it be your business next week? Make sure to enter!
Christina and Jeremy (behind the camera) popped into Propak this morning with goodies from Airdrie's Good Earth Coffeehouse. John Simoneau entered the @Work Network contest online at discoverairdrie.com and won coffee and delicious treats from Good Earth for himself and his co-workers.
Congrats to John and all of those at Propak! We'll do it all over again next week so make sure to enter YOUR business!
If you didn't know this, welcome to our province. We hope you enjoy your stay.
Many needed boosts, new batteries, extension cords and the like to make sure their cars would start last week, cause we all know you can't call in "car no starty"; (unless your boss already has, then it's OK).
So, in order to keep you and your car warm this winter, cause we all know -20 and colder is just on a break and will be coming back to nip our noses soon, we have some ideas for you to keep you and your car (and boss) happy.
This week, we talk remote car starters. People who have them consider them the greatest invention ever created. You push a button, your car starts. If your car starts, the heater starts. If your heater starts, you have a warm car waiting for you.
Dane Greenwell from Visions Electronics in Airdrie tells us what to look for in a car starter.
Visions is booking in advance for installs, thanks to the cold snap we just experienced, so you can buy one right now and it will be installed before the next cold snap hits (we hope).
Next week, we'll take a look at the dos and don'ts of block heaters and why they're important to your engine.
Do you ever get a craving for authentic East Indian food but hate having to fly 18 hours to get it?
Shalimar Cuisine has a wide selection of authentic Pakistani and East Indian food right here in our community.
Since changing to new ownership they have been receiving rave reviews about their delicious barbequed meats, uniquely prepared rice, and exceptional curries.
Shalimar Cuisine was nice enough to deliver some of their amazing dishes to us here at Air 106.1 and it's safe to say we're looking forward to the next time we get our hands, and tastebuds, on their delectable dishes.
Call 403-948-1012 to place an order or head on over to the restaurant located at 2002 Luxstone Boulevard Southwest.
You can't blame anyone for waiting in line - in minus 20 degree weather for free food.
Chop Stix opened their doors to a brave group of about 40 people Thursday afternoon, all decked out in winter jackets and toques. The first 100 people to walk through the doors got a card to eat for free, once a week, for an entire year. Lineups continued after the free promotion ended.
The new choice for gourmet Chinese food in our city promises to be fresh, with no MSG, and nothing to hide as well, with an open style kitchen where you can see the food prepared in front of your eyes.
And the end result got rave reviews from those who stood in the cold weather to get in. Many smiles and thumbs-ups highlighted the seating area.

Some people were born to be educators. Some have trouble retiring. Some can’t help but give back to the community and the next generation of Airdrie. Sylvia Eggerer is one of those people.
Originally from Manitoba, Sylvia began teaching because it’s what her mother did. “I come from a different era than a lot of people do nowadays, because there’s so many careers that girls can look at. When I was coming out you could be a nurse, a secretary, a teacher… and that was about it.”
Luckily, teaching clearly suited her. She taught just about everything in her 42 years at the chalkboard. Her specialty was high school, where she spent most of her years.
What has she learned through teaching? It’s all about building relationships between teachers, students and their peers. In her role as a trustee on the Rocky View Schools Board, she’s had the opportunity to take that one step further. She can “provide a liaison between parents, children, and the school system.”
Unfortunately it’s not always so straightforward. “There are a lot of struggles. Public education is getting very very expensive for us as taxpayers, and it’s really important that we make the best use of every dollar that we have.”
Six years into retirement Sylvia is still busy every day. She admits that she finds time each morning to read the paper and have a cup of coffee, but once the mug is empty she’s thrust into meetings. She’s on committees, at school council meetings, invited to student performances… there’s always something great happening that has her on the move.
At the end of the day, education always comes back to community. It’s all about Airdrie.
Airdrie is lucky to have someone like Sylvia at bat everyday for us. Her inability to slow down has translated into a great future for the schools in our city. As technology changes, she knows schools have to change, but knows that no matter what devices kids bring to school, it’s the relationships they build at school that will ultimately shape their future.
If you know someone who makes a difference in Airdrie and you would like to nominate them for the Friday Face, please send us an email:

Jennifer Avery, Jeff Clovis, Jewel Ries, and Christina Waldner
The first winners in the @Work Network were the folks at the Academy of Learning, and they were pretty excited! Jewel, who is a student at the school, actually entered the Academy in the contest. So, when we phoned director Jennifer Avery to tell her that they'd won, it came as a complete surprise!
Christina and Jeff, along with AIR 106.1 FM interns, Mikayla and Jeremy, stopped by this morning with direct trade coffee and yummy pastries from Good Earth Coffeehouse. I believe we were a hit! BIG thanks to Becky and Jason over at Good Earth!
You can enter your business to win - or enter a business you love and thinks deserves it. Just go to the @Work Network and fill in the form. Lunch at Nathan's Famous is also up for grabs each week!
