A local non-profit group gave back to the community at their recent meeting on April 24th.
The 100 Men Who Give A Damn in Airdrie donated $10,000 at their quarterly meeting to the Stephen’s Backpacks Society.
Three groups gave presentations at that meeting: Meals on Wheels, Nose Creek Valley Museum and Stephen’s Backpacks, with the 100 men selecting the Backpacks Society.
Keith Wilkinson with the 100 Men Airdrie Chapter, explains how they started up the group nearly two years ago.
“About a year and a half ago now, we were inspired by Red Deer, Calgary and a few other groups that were doing this. We tried to get it going then, it just didn’t seem to get the legs. We stepped up again, decided to give it another shot here ten months ago and here we are. It really took off this time so we are quite happy.”
Jack Lumley from the group says that each meeting features a presentation from the previous winners showing how their donations have helped.
“We have the previous quarter’s winner comes back and tells us all about what the money’s meant for them and that’s always a very touching time for everybody in the room because it’s their opportunity to come back and say thank you and to let the group know that the money has done good for them.”
The meetings also feature special guest speakers including Roger Millions of Hockey Night in Canada and former Calgary Stampeder Corey Mace.
Wilkinson says their turnout for the group meetings so far has been great.
“We have over 130 that have signed up. Not everybody can pay every time, that’s ok, we encourage people to follow. We did manage to get to 10 thousand bucks at our last meeting though. That was good but obviously, the more people signed up, the better.”
The group’s next meeting is on July 17th, where they will hear from another three charities seeking the donation.
