The province has launched a 'refreshed' respiratory virus dashboard and data is showing that influenza, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), as well as COVID-19, are trending upwards.

Break-down of statistics: 

Influenza

  • In total, Alberta has 70 Influenza cases, 14 hospital admissions, and two Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions. No deaths have been reported.
  • The Calgary zone has the most cases, with 44.

RSV

  • In total, Alberta has 23 RSV cases. The Calgary zone has the most cases, with 11.

COVID-19

  • In total, Alberta has 1,772 COVID-19 cases, 400 hospital admissions, and 17 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions. 29 deaths have been reported.
  • The Edmonton zone has the most cases, with 755, while Calgary has the second-highest number of cases with 613.

Influenza appears to be most prevalent in those aged 90 or older, while COVID-19 also appears to be most prevalent in those 80 or older.

The Calgary zone has 52 total respiratory virus outbreaks, with COVID-19 being the most prevalent; with Supportive Living/Home Living Sites having the most at 23. The Edmonton zone has the highest number of outbreaks, totalling 67. Province-wide, there are 155 respiratory virus outbreaks. 

According to the Health Minister, Adriana LaGrange, the dashboard's newer features will also include reporting for RSV cases and positivity, with plans to collect severe outcomes data in the near future.  

“The historical data tab, to be populated in the coming days, will provide year-by-year historical data by respiratory virus season."

The 2023-2024 season and data tracking began on August 28 and will continue throughout the fall and into the new year. The data is up to date as of Sept. 23 and will be updated on October 5 with data from September 30. 

The dashboard will be updated every Thursday throughout the respiratory virus season. 

Beginning on Tuesday, October 10, eligible Albertans will be able to book their annual immunizations against fall respiratory viruses, with appointments beginning on October 16.

Those who are eligible will be able to book their appointment for influenza and COVID-19 vaccines at an AHS clinic or pharmacy through the Alberta Vaccine Booking System, or by directly contacting community health clinics or by calling 811.

According to the Alberta Vaccine Booking System, the updated XBB COVID-19 vaccine formulations will be available in the coming weeks.
