A new season begins tonight (September 22nd) for the Western Hockey League, and a few local players are ready.

Barrett Sheen of the Kootenay Ice is hoping to improve on his impressive preseason when he leads his team against the Calgary Hitmen. The two clubs play a home and home series over the weekend with the first game scheduled for tonight in Cranbrook.

Airdrie goalie Kurtis Chapman could see some action with the Ice after the 19 year old made the final roster earlier this week.

Chapman's former teammate with the CFR Chemicals Bisons, Gary Haden, is entering his second full season with the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Tigers are on the road tonight as they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

After starting out the preseason roster for the Edmonton Oil Kings, third overall pick Jake Neighbours didn't make the regular season roster. Taden Rattie suffered the same fate, getting cut by the Prince George Cougars not long after being let go by the Red Deer Rebels.

Both games for the Kootenay Ice and Medicine Hat Tigers get underway at 7:00 tonight.
