A young Airdrie athlete received recognition at the Olds College Broncos Awards Night recently.

Thanks to COVID-19 restrictions, the awards were handed out on social media from April 17-28.

Kassidy Kelly grew up in Airdrie and is in her first year of Sports Management at Olds College.

"I've been playing soccer since I was about three years old, so it's been a long time and this is actually my first season of futsal. It's a little bit different than soccer," says Kelly. "It's indoors and it's on a much smaller field. It's pretty much on a basketball court and the ball that we play with is a little bit smaller and it's weighted."

Her first season of futsal is sure to be a memorable one as Kelly was named the Rookie of the Year.

"I felt so good, I worked so hard for that so it felt great," she says upon seeing her name on Instagram as the award winner.

Kelly says she likes elements of both soccer and futsal and couldn't choose which one she prefers. She just loves playing.

"I feel like this is the thing that I'm really the best at and this is where I feel the most confident, so I enjoy that but I also love the team environment," Kelly says, adding she's been missing playing very much since the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the world.

She says thankfully she was able to finish up her first year of schooling remotely.

"All my classes got moved online, but luckily we only had about a month left of the school year so it wasn't too bad."

Kelly is set to graduate from Olds College next year and says she'd love to continue playing soccer, perhaps at university.
