Airdrie fire crews were on the scene after completing ventilation efforts and monitoring air quality after a townhouse fire that they responded to in the Luxstone neighbourhood in the early afternoon hours on Tuesday, December 13.

At 2:14 p.m., yesterday, fire crews responded to a report of a possible structure fire involving a two-story townhouse unit.

"Upon the arrival of [fire crews], heavy smoke conditions were showing on the main level of the mid-unit of a four-unit townhouse complex. Smoke alarms had been activated and two residents, home at the time of the incident, had safely evacuated," a city press release stated.

Firefighters quickly made entry to the interior of the unit and found the seat of the fire located in the lower level laundry room. The blaze was quickly extinguished by the first crew.

"There is heavy smoke damage to the main and lower levels of a unit of origin and as well as minor smoke damage to adjacent units on either side of the fire scene."

One individual was assessed and treated by EMS on the scene for minor smoke inhalation. A total of four pieces of fire apparatus and 13 firefighters were on the scene.

"The Airdrie Fire Department would like to remind residents that smoke alarms save lives. It is important it is to ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home (including the basement), outside each sleeping area, and inside each bedroom. Test each alarm monthly to ensure they are working properly," the city's fire department reminded residents.
