The City of Airdrie has identified a potential issue with green cart lids and plans to have them all inspected this month.

Green carts that were delivered to Airdrie residences between 2014 and 2017 are impacted, which the City says makes up the majority of Airdrie's green carts. The City says some lids on the carts have come detached and fallen into the collection vehicles.

After noticing an increase in calls for replacement lids, Airdrie Waste and Recycling Services contacted the manufacturer. IPL Inc. is the company that supplies the City of Airdrie with the carts and plans to replace the plastic lids with ones designed to reduce the chances of the inside clips breaking.

A team from IPL will be inspecting all of the impacted carts in Airdrie between June 8 - 29. In order to facilitate this, the City asks residents to leave green carts out on your designated collection day from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., even after the contents have been collected.

Once the green cart has been inspected and a new lid replaced, IPL will put a barcode sticker on the lid and the City asks residents not to remove this sticker. IPL is covering the costs of the lid replacements.

While most of the city's green carts will need to be inspected, the ones with speckling similar to the blue carts (pictured below) will not.
