It's another big honour for a local writer and director as her play will be featured at the Calgary Fringe Festival this summer.

Kim Cheel's play "Carolien and Wessex" which debuted last year was selected to join the popular festival but she says it wasn't an easy feat.

"You enter your name into a lottery and you pay an administrative fee. I won the best lottery of my life and then pony up a lot of cash. I did that with the help of a lot of local sponsors."

The play won an award for Outstanding Writing at the 2017 Foothills Once Act Festival and has wowed crowds in Airdrie since.

Cheel says that it's amazing to not only represent her talents at the festival but the arts scene in Airdrie.

"You look at the list of people who are going to be a part of Fringe, there's a group from Germany, a group from California and most from Calgary and then this little play from little old Airdrie. Airdrie is representing in the big city."

The festival runs August 3-11 in Inglewood and the play will perform six times in that span.

Cheel says there are a couple of changes for this festival from previous performances and believes it will be a knockout hit.

"Even with a different director and one new cast member, it changes the play a lot. The feeling of the play is still the same but there's some special moments that were undiscovered in the previous showing. It can be a very new experience for people even if you've already seen it."
