The City of Airdrie has announced the reopening of playgrounds.

All playgrounds within the city are set to reopen today (Friday, May 22) at 5 p.m.

The City asks anyone using the playgrounds to obey the following guidelines:

  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Practice physical distancing of two metres (6 feet)
  • For your safety, wash your hands before and after using the equipment
  • Gatherings must not exceed Alberta Health Services guidelines for number of people in an outdoor space (currently 50)

Playground users are advised that city equipment is not sanitized and that high-touch areas can be a source of COVID-19 transmission.

The City of Airdrie says it has been taking a measured approach to re-open safely now that Alberta is in Stage One of the relaunch strategy. According to the City, feedback received from residents varies, with some wanting things to open more quickly while others feel things should wait.

"We ask that you do what makes you feel comfortable, while helping prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keeping our community safe," the City said in a statement on social media.

The following remain closed in Airdrie:

  • City Hall (Staff is available by phone or email)
  • All City park washrooms
  • Airdrie Public Library (Services are available online)
  • Genesis Place
  • Public Works
  • Arenas
  • Bert Church LIVE Theatre
  • Town and Country Centre
  • Municipal Enforcement - limited access
  • RCMP Reception - limited access
  • Licensing
  • All Fire Stations

Last week, the skate park at Chinook Winds re-opened. Users are reminded to regularly wash hands or use hand sanitizer, avoid touching their face, and maintain physical distancing of at least two metres.

In compliance with provincial health guidelines, no more than 50 people are allowed to use the skate park at a time. The City says security and law enforcement will regularly stop by the skate park to ensure guidelines are being followed.
