As Hometown Hockey hits Airdrie this weekend (December 16-17), we look back at the players, coaches, trainers and unsung heroes that shaped Airdrie's Hockey history.

Airdrie Hockey player Dana Tyrell has traveled a long way in his hockey career. The 28 year old currently plays with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL. Before that he's played for several teams, including two in the National Hockey League.

Tyrell's most cherished hockey memory was when he finally made the Airdrie Xtreme Bantam team.

"Growing up and playing Atom and Peewee, I always went to the Xtreme games and just watched those guys, those guys were like men to me. Just watching them play, I just always dreamed about playing for that team. I just remember how nervous I was and how much work I put in, especially that summer to try and make that team. When I found out I made it I remember being so excited."

In two seasons with the Xtreme, Tyrell scored 23 goals and 61 assists and added ten more points in the playoffs. He eventually joined the UFA Bisons before playing three seasons with the Prince George Cougars.

Just a few short years later, another one of his hockey dreams came true.

"Drafted to Tampa Bay in 2007, that was a huge one for me and my family. Scoring my first NHL goal against Fleury was awesome, my seventh game in the NHL."

Tyrell played 135 games in the NHL with the Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets. Regardless of what league he plays in today, Tyrell says Airdrie was the best place for him to play hockey and he knew that from the minute he moved here.

"I just remember being so excited, I remember how much more talented hockey was out in the rural communities, in Airdrie, and how much more fun it was going to be. It was a chance of a lifetime for me. It really peaked my career and it got me into the NHL so I'm very happy and grateful about it."
