This construction season will be a busy one for Airdrie as around 40 projections will be on the go at some point.

Glenn Archer, the Team Lead for the Capital Projects Office with) the city of Airdrie talks about which project is the biggest.

"The biggest one in terms of value, obviously, the most strikingly visible is the 40th Avenue Interchange."

The 40th Ave project started a few years ago with design; construction started last year and they (the city) expect it to be completed this year on time and on budget.

This summer numerous projects will be taking up roadways and sidewalks and pathways.

"Lots of road repairs, sidewalk repairs and deep utility repairs. There are several design projects on roads for the next few years to manage growth, regional park development, regional land development, and design work on the Ron Ebbesen Arena."

For those that spend a lot of time at Ron Ebbesen Arena (built around 1980) for hockey season, you will probably really like these upgrades.

"At this point, it's in the middle of its life to extend its life for another 25 or 30 years, the entire arena area will be upgraded."

Archer mentioned everything from the bleachers, boards, and the pads the ice is on and more will be replaced next year, of course during a tight time frame.

"Infrastructure has a life. Sometimes you can extend the life at a lower cost by fixing it by maintaining it along the way. This particularly applies to things like roads, if you wait till the road fails, and then replace it, it's more expensive than if you maintain it as you go."

Archer mentioned the new Library and Multi-Use Facility Project is of course one of them, it's just not under the Capital Projects' purview.

"It is currently in detailed design and the plan is to get going on constructing this year as well."

It's a small window for construction season in southern Alberta as it is about 100 days explained Archer.

"We have to go very fast and try and do as much as we can in that short window."

Of course with all this construction, Archer wants to remind Airdronians to please be patient and follow the posted speed limits.
