The Jobs Minister for Alberta is resigning from office even earlier than anticipated after announcing in May he would not run in the next election.

Doug Schweitzer, the minister for jobs, the economy, and innovation, announced his resignation from the cabinet in a brief message shared on social media.

Additionally, he declares that by the end of the month, he will retire from his position as Calgary-United Elbow's Conservative Party legislator.

A seat opening must be filled within six months of calling a byelection.

Schweitzer's choice comes as the party prepares for a vote on Oct. 6 to remove Kenney as leader of the party and premier.

He was a seasoned conservative strategist in Manitoba, and he oversaw Jim Prentice's 2014 leadership campaign in Alberta.

In the 2017 contest to become the leader of the UCP, he finished a distant third to Kenney. He then served as the justice minister in Kenney's cabinet before switching to the employment ministry.
