Update:

Airdrie RCMP has located and charged a youth in relation to a bear spray incident near an Airdrie middle school on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023. The Airdrie youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act has been charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Common Nuisance

The Airdrie RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying the involved parties. Tips and information from the public were helpful in this case. Airdrie RCMP are not looking for any further suspects at this time.

 

Emergency services have cleared the scene of a local middle school after an incident involving bear spray.

Though initially police didn't release the name of the school, they have since stated that incident occurred at the Ecole Airdrie Middle School. Earlier this afternoon, Airdrie RCMP, along with fire and ambulances was called to the middle school shortly before 1 p.m.

According to police, the altercation occurred outside near the school and was with a small group of youth who do not attend the middle school.

However, a number of middle school students were outside during the altercation Police underlined that these students were not directly sprayed but were being treated on the scene by emergency personnel and school staff.

Approximately 37 students were treated and police had previously asked parents not to attend the school at the time of the incident and follow their normal student pick-up procedures.

Police said an investigation is under way.
