At the end of last weekend’s game between the Airdrie Irish and Cold Lake Fighter Jets, things got intense after the Fighter Jets came out on top 41-15.

When the game ended the benches cleared and a brawl began between players, coaches and fans.

In a written statement to Discover Airdrie, the Albertan Football League (AFL) made it clear this won't be tolerated.

“The Alberta Football League does not condone any of the actions during and following Saturday night's game between the Irish and the Fighter Jets. The league will be speaking with representatives from both teams and also looking over video footage to try and find out what took place. After that process is complete the league will take proper disciplinary action towards those involved. We apologize to all in attendance and hope to finish the season with no further incidents.”

Both teams have since released statements on social media addressing the situation. The Irish statement read:

“The Airdrie Irish are disappointed in the product put on the field this past Saturday against the Cold Lake Fighter Jets. Not because of the final score, but because of the actions taken by individuals during and following the scheduled game. The club holds its players, coaches and fans accountable to a high standard of Professional conduct, rooted in respect, integrity and honour for the game of football.

The incident involving physical altercation of players, coaches and fans following the game will not be tolerated and appropriate internal disciplinary action has been taken against club members following the process outlined in the team bylaws. The club intends this action to set precedence for similar action to be taken by both the Cold Lake Fighter Jets organization and the Alberta Football League, ensuring a safe, fair and inclusive environment for all participants in Alberta Football League games.”

The Fighter Jets also released a statement:

“The Cold Lake Fighter Jets are disappointed in the events that took place on the field this past Saturday against the Airdrie Irish. The actions taken by individuals during and following the scheduled game are unacceptable. The club holds its players, coaches and fans accountable to a high standard of professional conduct, rooted in respect, integrity and honour for the game of football.

Following the incident(s) where verbal/physical altercations took place the appropriate internal disciplinary action has been taken against club members following the process outlined in the team bylaws. The club intends that this action will help to ensure a safe, fair and inclusive environment for all participants in Alberta Football League games and that there is a CLEAR ZERO TOLERANCE policy.”
