The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an officer was injured in a shooting that occurred early this morning in southwest Calgary.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Friday, police were called to the 500 block of Canyon Meadows Drive S.W., for reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in a residential parking lot with an occupant blaring loud music and behaving erratically.

"When an officer arrived at the scene, a man fired at the officer, wounding him in the leg. The officer then returned fire and the male fled on foot toward a nearby park. The man continued down the path where he then took his own life."

The officer was immediately given medical care by officers and EMS on the scene and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The officer has since been released.

No further details are available at this time as ASIRT investigates.

Calgary's Police Chief Mark Neufeld arrived on the scene as investigators continue their work.
