Airdrie fire crews were called out to the area of Summerhill Plaza this afternoon after a car caught fire.

Witnesses report the Chevelle went up in flames at approximately 2:20 p.m. and multiple loud explosions reportedly followed as the tires blew from the heat.

It's believed the occupants of the vehicle were able to get out safely after noticing smoke and pulling over.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel confirms no one was injured in the incident.

He says by the time crews arrived, the vintage vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The Fire Prevention Bureau continues to investigate the cause of the blaze.
