High school football is just around the corner, and the Croxford Cavaliers have been hard at work getting ready for the upcoming season.

Associate Head Coach Mark Friesen said they started practices on August 16, and in their second year in RVS Football, they feel this is their best opportunity so far to see big results.

"This is kind of the first year that we have our Grade Twelves that have been with us since Grade Ten. It's very exciting for those guys to have a full experience with the team, and to go through a number of years with a similar coaching staff."

Friesen said the team has a number of players to watch, including Grade Twelve linebacker Owen Kramer and a number of returning Grade Elevens like Cordain Walcott, Quarterback Keagan Henderson and Defensive Back/Running Back Keegan Proudlock.

The team will face some challenges as Friesen said the team is still finding its place in a competitive Rocky View league that includes two high caliber Cochrane teams. He said the team will also have to find their place within the storied rivalry between George McDougall and Bert Church.

"I think it's going to be a big challenge to place both those squads. There's a lot of history that those programs have with each other, so we're really eager and excited to step into that and create our own narrative in that way."

Another significant challenge is the team's lack of a field. Right now, they're practicing at the Ed Eggerer Field near Genesis Place. Even so, Friesen thinks a deep commitment to the team, from the coaching staff on down to the players, combined with some real talent on the field gives them a serious shot this season.

Friesen said the Cavaliers are setting their aim high.

"Realistically, I think we have every opportunity to win the league, and that's not me being delusional in any way. I honestly think that, I can kind of speak for the rest of the coaching staff and say that we come to practice daily with the intent that that's our ultimate goal in the end."
