The City of Airdrie has announced today (Wednesday, June 21) that they are lifting the fire restriction due to recent weather conditions.

Both Rocky View County and Cochrane ended their fire advisories earlier this week due to the amount have rain we have received.

James Kostuk, Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Public Education with Airdrie Fire Department (AFD) explains why the restriction has been lifted on the official first day of summer.

"With the cooler temperatures, the increased amount of moisture and everything starting to turn green with plants and grasses, we are able to remove our fire restriction."

With the restrictions now lifted, larger burn piles are now allowed, as long as you contact AFD beforehand. Backyard fire pits were allowed during the restriction as long as they follow the set guidelines.

When asked about what the conditions would have to be like to put restrictions back in place, Kostuk said they monitor multiple aspects.

"We watch the weather, high winds, high temperature, low relative humidity; these are all signs that the risk is going up. That's when we started looking at implementing a fire ban."

With no restrictions in place, the AFD does want to remind residents to still be careful and practice good habits.

"Don't throw cigarette butts out the window, in vegetation, potted plants or landscaping material. We need you to recognize when the danger of wildfires starts to get high. That includes those high winds, low humidity, drought, and elevated temperatures."

As of right now, Airdrie is forecasted to receive more rain Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
