At the most recent City Council meeting (Feb 21), Airdrie City Council proclaimed March 6 as World Lymphedema Awareness Day.

According to the National Cancer Institute, Lymphedema is the build-up of fluid in soft body tissues when the lymph system is damaged or blocked.

As of 2019, it’s estimated the number of Canadians living with lymphedema is 1 million, giving a prevalence of 2.8%

The lymph system is a network of lymph vessels, tissues, and organs that carry lymph throughout the body. Lymphedema occurs when lymph is not able to flow through the body the way that it should.

Councillor Heather Spearman made a motion proclaiming March 6, 2022 as World Lymphedema Awareness Day to educate, promote awareness, and provide support for Lymphedema families and the medical community.

The motion was passed unanimously.
