The Cochrane Cobras JV boys basketball team finished their season at the zones tournament last week, and team spokesperson Bob Higginson says the players, coaches and schools could not be more pleased with the season.

"This is a testament to what good coaching, good mentorship, and dedication from players can bring."

Higginson said once the players were selected from tryouts, the team bonded early and quickly.

"This is a very unique and special group in that there was no odd man out, there were twelve men in and these boys were friends."

That chemistry translated to success on the courts, as the Cobras played a challenging season and still managed a 26-4 record, as well as both Rocky View Division and South Central Zones titles. That included going undefeated in Rocky View league play, and only losing a few tournament games against top tier competition.

With the season over, the team is looking to the future. A number of players will move on to the senior team next year, but Higginson says the outlook for the junior team is still good.

"We had about seven boys in grade nine and the balance of the team was grade 10, so we do have a solid core group of boys that will be back in the JV program next year."

The group will come back together for the 2019 season, along with a few players that are already playing at the senior level, at which point they will be able to make a strong push for a provincial title.
