With Cochrane's curbside recycling program just about ready to roll, media were given a tour of the town's recycling depot recently that highlighted the challenges facing the Cochrane program and some of the innovative solutions that town staff have come up with to overcome them.

Glass is notorious for being difficult to recycle as it's hard to process and purify, plus it has few post-consumer uses. But while glass is not included in the town's curbside recycling program, it's still accepted at the drop-off depot and, because of a new partnership with the City of Calgary, will be used regionally on Calgary roads.

The partnership will see Cochrane's glass shipped to the East Calgary Landfill, where it's been stockpiling glass for about two years.
