Cochrane RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs worked together to rescue a driver from a burning vehicle early this morning after he drove into oncoming traffic on Highway 22 north of the town.

RCMP say they responded to a call of a driver that was driving head-on, towards oncoming vehicles.  Due to the dangerous nature of the situation, RCMP started to pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

Three oncoming vehicles took evasive action and managed to avoid a collision with the suspect vehicle.  A fourth vehicle, a semi, also tried to avoid colliding but the suspect vehicle clipped the truck's side, entered the ditch, rolled, and then caught fire.

Police and Alberta Sheriffs arrived on scene immediately and while Sheriffs put out the fire with extinguishers, RCMP removed the driver from the vehicle.

He was taken to hospital by EMS paramedics with what are reported to be non-life-threatening injuries.  Fortunately, no one in any of the other vehicles were injured during the incident.

An RCMP collision analyst was called to the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

The Cochrane RCMP say charges are anticipated for the 36-year-old driver who is from Calgary.
