While Airdrie is counting down the days (five days to be exact) till the Canada Day Parade, fireworks, as well as concerts on Saturday, July, the surrounding areas also have plenty of events planned as well. 

Calgary

Although initially, The City of Calgary had announced that there would be no fireworks display this year, the decision was reversed and fireworks will light up the night sky. According to The City's website, the show will begin at approximately 11 p.m. and the fireworks will be launched from Stampede Park.

"Watch the fireworks from Fort Calgary or from one of many other great viewing areas in the city. The Stampede grounds will be closed to the public and is not a viewing location due to the setup of the 2023 Stampede. Vehicle access into West Ramsay (Scotsman’s Hill) will also be restricted."

Calgary has a multitude of events on Saturday, during the day. The celebrations begin at 10:45 a.m. at Olympic Plaza and the municipal building and will run till 5 p.m. St. Patrick's Island is also hosting events during the day including a display with Calgary Firefighters and their Aquatic Rescue Team. Other events include stilt walkers, face painting and airbrush tattoos, crafts and activity tents as well as food trucks.

Fort Calgary's Canada Day events begin at 4:30 p.m. and run till 11 p.m. Events include an Indigenous showcase and powwow, Indigenous Artisan Market, cultural booths, walking tours starting every hour, and food trucks to name a few.

There will be several road closures on Canada Day in the area of the East Village from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. including:

  • 8th Avenue S.E. from 4th Street S.E. to 6th Street S.E.
  • 6th Street S.E. from 9th Avenue S.E. to 8th Avenue S.E.
  • 5th Street S.E. from 9th Avenue S.E. to 7th Avenue S.E.

Crossfield

Crossfield is holding a two-day music festival event, SavageFest starting on the morning of Canada Day at 8:30 a.m. A pancake breakfast will also be served in the morning. The two-day festival is being run in conjunction with the Crossfield Farmer's Market, which is being held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Canada Day.

However, Savagefest is unique in that the festival showcases eight locally diverse bands from the area, while also aiming to raise awareness in the community about the Homes For Heroes Foundation, by hosting local veterans as well as those currently serving Canadian Armed Forces. The aim is to also raise donations for Calgary Veterans Village. But it's not just about the music, as Canada Day fireworks are slated for 11:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Advanced tickets for Savagefest can be purchased online and they can also be bought at the Crossfield Rodeo Grounds Entry Gate (Crossfield Pete Knight Days) on the day of the event.

Irricana

The Town of Irricana has announced that on Canada Day, the evening celebrations will include a family and free event beginning at 7 p.m. till 10 p.m. which will include a live DJ at the Lions Community Hall. Children will also have their chance to get face painting done at the hall. A fireworks display is planned for 10:30 p.m., though the town underlined it is dependent on the weather. 

"In addition, there will be a dedication to our local Firefighters’ 30th Anniversary. Daytime events are dependent on community involvement," the town stated on their website.

Carstairs

The Town of Carstairs has several events on July 1, including an event hosted by the Carstairs Legion beginning at 11 a.m. and running till 5 p.m. According to the town's website, the event will happen rain or shine and there are activities for everyone including for the youngest that will see them paired with volunteer cadets - this includes an egg relay, three-legged races, as well as a tug-of-war to name a few. There is a $1.00 BBQ fee which includes a hot dog, popcorn and cupcake.

There are also Canada Day celebrations planned in Memorial Park starting at 11:30 a.m. and running till 1:30 p.m. There will be outdoor games, treats and a bike parade. You can either bring a delicious picnic lunch or grab a bite to eat at the Legion. 

The evening will end with fireworks at the Carstairs Community Golf Course. 

"[The] fireworks display will be at dusk, usually around 9:30 pm. Head to the golf course early to get a seat in the restaurant," the town urged on its website.

Didsbury 

The Didsbury Museum will be open from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. on Canada Day and in celebrating Canada's 156 birthday, the museum is offering all sorts of things to do on Saturday including exhibits, games, and performances.

At 2 p.m., a family picnic will be hosted in front of the museum which will have ice cream and other sweets. 

"While there, you can learn more about the relationship between Anne of Green Gables author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and her friendship with Didsbury's first teacher, Ephraim Weber."

The museum is also showing its local Indigenous Peoples display, which includes a tribute honouring Didsbury's past Fire Chief, Councillor and Mayor, Richard (Rick) Mousseau, a member of the Saulteux tribe.

Free swimming will also run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Didsbury Aquatic Centre. And as with other towns, Didsbury's Canada Day will end with a fireworks display.

Olds

Instead of finishing off Canada Day with fireworks, the Town of Olds is kicking off Canada Day on Friday, June 30 with a fireworks display at the Rotary Athletic Park. On Saturday, the Canada Day Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by entertainment and other events lasting till 3 p.m. Residents are reminded to check for road closures due to the parade.
