Teachers, school staff, administrators, bus drivers, and students are joining the rest of Alberta schools in putting their feet up for a few days to catch their breath after four months of navigating the trials and tribulations of COVID-19.

Schools across Alberta broke on Friday for a well deserved two weeks off for the holidays.

As they did, Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, gave an update on the status of the virus in schools.

"There are currently active alerts or outbreaks in 443 schools, or about 19 percent of schools in the province.   Currently, these schools have a combined total of 1,971 cases."

Four schools in the City of Airdrie remain on the provincial watch list with an outbreak declared with five or more cases where disease could have been acquired or transmitted in the school.  Those schools include Herons Crossing School, Bert Church High School, Windsong Heights School, and Ecole Airdrie Middle School.

Four other Airdrie schools are listed as having outbreaks of between two and four COVID-19 cases.  W.H. Croxford High School, Ecole Edwards Elementary School, Good Shepherd School, and Ralph McCall School are among those schools listed by the province.
