The Mayor of Irricana has resigned.

Frank Friesen says the decision is effective immediately.

Friesen posted a letter to the Irricana Facebook page on Friday (March 25) that said that he and his husband were moving away from Irricana.  In the letter, Friessen thanked the residents of Irricana for allowing him the privilege of serving them over the past six years.  He also thanked the current administration and council for the work they've done.  Friesen then thanked his husband, who he called "my biggest supporter" for his unwavering support.

Before moving back to Irricana, where he lived when he was young, Friesen was a councilor for the Village of Cereal.  He was first elected to Irricana council in a 2016 byelection.  He was re-elected in 2017 and was appointed Mayor by the rest of the council.  He ran again last October, won, and was again appointed mayor.

On the Town of Irricana website, Friesen's bio explains that he and his husband came back to the community for a slower pace of life and country living..

Friesen's resignation means a by-election must be held in Irricana in the near future.  Town council will debate when a byelection will be held during their next meeting.
