Airdrie soccer player Sam Gagne shone in Team Alberta's first match of the 2017 Canada Summer Games last night (August 8) in Winnipeg.

Alberta's first opponent of the tournament was Prince Edward Island. The Albertans controlled the ball for most of the game, spending a significant amount of time on the attack.

Gagne scored the sole goal of the match at the 36 minute mark, putting Alberta up by one point. With both teams unable to get another goal, Alberta won the match and eliminated Prince Edward Island from the tournament.

With one win now under their belts, Alberta is guaranteed to advance at least to the quarterfinals of the tournament. They will face Team Ontario tonight at 6:30pm.
