There's a very strong possibility that avid sky watchers will have plenty to look for this weekend as it appears that a very strong geomagnetic storm will produce vivid Northern Lights this weekend.

According to the forecasts from the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center, a geomagnetic storm watch was issued yesterday for May 11.

Alberta Aurora Chasers on X (formerly known as Twitter) also posted their excitement about the possibility of a dazzling celestial show this weekend, as well.

According to the website auroraforecast.com, predictions for Friday are currently a 9/10, classified as an elevated aurora.

"Active aurora possible with a good chance of isolated minor auroral substorms and favourable conditions for major aurora activity."

Saturday looks even more promising, with predictions ranked as 10/10, classified as an intense aurora.

"Active aurora possible with a slight chance of isolated minor auroral substorms and favourable conditions for major aurora activity."

The Canadian Space Agency, recommends that for those wanting to see the Northern Lights, it's best to choose a location free of light pollution.

"The bright city lights that light up the sky make low-intensity auroras invisible."

Other tips include checking the aurora forecast to find out whether the northern lights will be visible in the sky near you and checking local weather forecasts.

"Clouds, precipitation and the full Moon make it difficult to see the aurora. Look all around you, not only north: auroras may appear anywhere in the sky."

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, there may be a few clouds in the evening in the Airdrie region, while Saturday evening will be clear, while Sunday night will be increasingly cloudy.
