If you're going to send out a competitive squad, you need to build for the future.

That's the philosophy of the Rockyview Silvertips Junior Ladies Lacrosse team as they hold Winter Camps prior to the start of the 2017 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season.

The team has been hosting a series of camps at Genesis Place, which have drawn upwards of 40 players.

Assistant Coach Patrick Greenan of Cochrane said girls at the camp come from Red Deer down to Calgary and so far, he's been impressed.

"We had a great show last week with about 35 runners and 40 the week before."

Girls taking part are between nine and 17 and play minor lacrosse.  Their instructors are the Silvertips Junior Ladies who are in major lacrosse and are 17 to 21.

Greenan thinks teaching the basics is important.  He remarked, "one of the nice things about having a winter camp is you don't have any coaches watching you so you can welcome as many mistakes as you can to try to get the fundamentals down."

Greenan also said the team has an open door policy.  "Any girl who wants to is welcome to come and try the sport.  All they have to do is register as they come in."

Winter camps will be held on Friday evenings for the next four weeks.

The Silvertips Junior Ladies are made up of players from Cochrane, Airdrie, northeast Calgary, Strathmore, Canmore and Banff.  They hold practices in Cochrane, Airdrie and Calgary and play their home games at the Plainsmen Arena in Airdrie.
