Seven local kickboxers and Muay Thai athletes competed in Edmonton over the weekend bringing home some medals for their performances.

The athletes range in age from 8 to 34 and are part of Bellegarde's Dragon Airdrie Muay Thai & Kickboxing, that train out of the Airdrie Martial Arts Centre.

The competitors were taking part in the World Kickboxing Association (WKA) Nationals in Muay Thai and K1.

Head coach Luis Cofre said all of the athletes performed well but it was their smallest and lightest competitor of the tournament that walked away with the best results.

“We had an eight-year-old, Levi Anderson, who walked away with two golds, one in kickboxing and one in Muay Thai,” said Cofre

Levi Anderson took home two golds, Jessica Avery won a gold and a silver in her events, Jenica Avery won bronze, Timothy Contos, Logan Sanderson, Anthony Palombo and Mateo Guevara all won bronze in their events.

“Everyone who went up came back with a medal which is pretty impressive for us and I’m proud of them,” said Cofre.

Cofre said he’s hoping the Dragons will be able to participate in the WKA Nationals event happening next spring too.

“The nationals will now be held in Warsaw Poland,” Cofre said. “For us to get there it would take a little bit of fundraising, but we’d love to send some of our members to represent team Canada in their age brackets and represent our school.”

In the meantime, the Airdrie Martial Arts Centre will be holding its Trial by Fire event in November where competitors will put their skills to the test in both Muay Thai and Kickboxing.
