Watching the summer games in Rio has an affect on athletes around the world and the Nose Creek Swim Association is no exception.

Although many of the swimmers provided motivation, one particular competitor in the summer games has resonated with local youth swimmers.

"A good core of our group is between the age of 11 and 16 so these guys are thinking, 'Whoa, wait a minute. Penny [Oleksiak] is 16 years-old, she was in the games. I am now 12-year-olds. In four years, for the next games, could that be me?'" said Alexx Diep, Assistant Head Coach.

The kids aren't the only ones feeling the motivation and inspiration; Diep said watching the games makes him want to further his career.

"I am very curious about the coaching side of things. We put this spotlight on the swimmers but it takes a village to raise a kid and it takes a whole staff to really train an athlete. I get really inspired and right away I ask myself, 'what do I need to do to advance my career?' The games have that power of inspiring anyone."

Although the new swim season doesn't start up for a couple of weeks, Diep said he knows from past experience how inspired the swimmers will be and it will reflect in the new season.

Diep added that with all the local interest, Airdrie should add a new pool.

"I think what would help young swimmers in Airdrie would be to have equal opportunity to train. Right now, we have a waitlist of 100 kids and we get calls from newcomers saying, 'Hey, I have a daughter, she's 11. We watched the games, we are fully inspired by this girl and I want to support my daughter. Is there a spot for my daughter?' And we have to say no because we don't have a spot for her."

Diep thinks Airdrie needs to build a new pool in order to offer opportunities to those who would like to try swimming and join the NSCA.
