The film and television industry has really taken off in Alberta and it's seen our local area and some Airdrie residents being part of big productions that are now getting huge accolades.

Under The Banner of Heaven has been nominated for two Critics Choice Awards, "Best Limited Series" and Andrew Garfield, who was the star of the show is being nominated for "Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television." With his role in the show, Garfield was also nominated for an Emmy for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie".

The series is in part, by the true story of the murders of Brenda Lafferty and her young daughter. It has also mixed in some material adapted from Jon Krakauer's non-fiction novel, Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. Detective Jeb Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield) investigates the murders.

Multiple Airdonians were able to work on the set including Amanda Tozser who was the First Assistant Makeup Artist for the series and Jamie Shukaliak who had a chance to work on the set quite a bit in background roles.

"I was very lucky to be part of the makeup crew for Under The Banner of Heaven. It had an incredibly talented cast and a devoted hard working crew. Having this series filmed in Alberta is an addition to many incredible films and series that our beautiful Province has been home to," said Tozser.

The show was filmed in lots of different Alberta locations including Calgary, Didsbury, north of Cochrane, Okotoks, and many more.
