It wasn't the homecoming that the George Mac Mustangs were hoping for after falling to Springbank yesterday afternoon (September 15th).

The High School Football team played to packed house at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park in Airdrie, hoping to ride the hometown momentum to an opening night win.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the Phoenix rose to the occasion, scoring at almost every opportunity to take the game 43-0.

Springbank was led by a dominating performance from running back David Taylor, who scored a couple touchdowns, as did wide receiver James Podolsky and Brendan Frolek.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, coach Chris Glass said they had some bright spots.

"Cade Yakiwchuk played probably one of the best games I've seen him play since coaching, he was a force out there. Our young kids got a lot of experience, they learned a lot today."

Coach Glass also praised the works of players like Enoch Angbony, Josh Seaman and Wyatt Anderson.

The team has a quick turnaround before their next game against the Bobcats, and Glass says they need to put the past behind them.

"What I want to see is a short memory and that's important. We can't focus too much on the score, we can't focus too much on what happened. I like our matchup there. They're a younger squad too. We saw them in the Jamboree and I like how we stack up against them so I'm hoping for a much different result."

The Mustangs play the Bow Valley Bobcats at Ed Eggerer Field on September 19th at 5pm.
