The volleyball season started last night (September 13) in Rocky View with Airdrie's junior and senior girls teams on the road and most of the junior and senior boys teams playing at home.

The season openers saw the George McDougall Mustangs matched up against the Springbank Phoenix, while the Bert Church Chargers took on the Chestermere Lakers. The Croxford Cavaliers faced the Cochrane Cobras.

Mustangs - Phoenix

The George McDougall Mustangs saw plenty of success in their first games of the year against the Springbank Phoenix, with three of their four teams emerging with victories.

The senior boys Mustangs came away with three straight wins in three straight sets. The Mustangs managed to hold onto a four point lead to win set one 25-21. Sets two and three were closer, but the Mustangs managed to win both by a 25-22 margin.

The JV boys Mustangs also welcomed the Phoenix to the Corral. Set 1 was the closest, going to the Mustangs 25-18. It only got better from there for George Mac, who won the second set 25-14 and finished things off in the third set 25-15.

On the road, the senior girls Mustangs grabbed their first win of the season in Springbank. George Mac came out strong, winning the fist set 25-22. The Phoenix surged back to grab the second set 26-24, but that was their only win as the Mustangs claimed the third set 25-22 and finished things off in the fourth set 25-21.

The junior girls Mustangs did not do as well, dropping their season opener in three straight sets. The squad kept it close in the first set 27-25, then struggled in the second set, which the Phoenix dominated 25-14. Springbank finished things off in the third set 25-22 to claim the win.

Chargers - Lakers

Only three Chargers squads saw action last night.

Burt Church's senior boys team were the only winners against Chestermere. The Chargers held the Lakers under twenty in three straight sets, winning the first 25-16, the second 25-14 and the third 25-15.

The senior girls Chargers kept things close against the Lakers, but ultimately dropped three straight on the road. The Chargers lost set one by only four points with a final score of 25-21. Set two was even closer, going to the Lakers 25-23. Chestermere finished things off in the third set 25-20.

The JV girls Chargers also lost three straight sets on the road in Chestermere. The Chargers only broke 15 points in one set, as the Lakers claimed set one 25-15, set two 25-0, and set three 25-16.

The JV boys squad did not have a game.

Cavaliers - Cobras

The Croxford Cavaliers could not find an answer for the Cochrane Cobras, with all four teams falling in their games.

The Croxford senior boys did manage to win one set at home. The Cavaliers rallied to win set one 25-19, but couldn't put things together to win another set as the Cobras took set two 25-15, set three 25-16 and ended things with a 25-22 victory in set four.

Croxford's JV boys had a similar evening. The Cavs easily won set one 25-17, before the Cobras took three straight, grabbing set two 25-18, set three 25-16 and set four 25-22.

In Cochrane, the Cavaliers girls teams didn't win a set, as both the junior and senior girls teams lost their matches to the Cobras three sets to none.
