It has been an eventful few days for Dave Maffitt as he received two prestigious awards in two days. The Alberta Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal on Sunday (Provincial), and the Platinum Jubilee Award (Federal) Monday night.

MaffittMaffitt received the Alberta Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee Medal.

"I'm absolutely honoured to receive this award, at this point in my life," mentioned Maffitt.

Maffitt first moved to Airdrie in 2006, his volunteering journey first took off with coaching his kid's sports.

"I joined the board of Airdrie minor basketball in 2008 and spent six years with them, five years as president. My swan song was the 2014 Summer Games where we had the basketball tournament, so I had to coordinate a basketball tournament for the eight zones of Alberta."

When Maffitt retired from Airdrie Minor Basketball, he was recruited to Volunteer Airdrie.

"I wanted to understand why people weren't getting out to volunteer and so I was hoping through working with Volunteer Airdrie, we could figure that out and get people volunteering and more involved in the community."

Maffitt has been with Volunteer Airdrie since May 2013. He is on the Volunteer Alberta Board while also being on many karate associations.

For Maffitt, he mentioned he sees volunteering as a hobby more than anything.

"I don't view it as maybe a lot of people do like. It's an imposition on their time, this is my hobby. I love doing this every day, I get up and I love doing something that's involving me in a volunteer role. I have made so many new friends, it's incredible."

When asked about how it feels to be recognized with these awards, Maffett said he views it as an award for Volunteer Airdrie as this is something the organization has been hoping for for years.

"To receive these two awards, really helps us as an organization elevate our awareness in the community, which I'm very grateful for."
