Calgary police are investigating a collision involving a CTrain earlier today which claimed the life of a 48-year-old man.

According to CPS, police were called for reports of a collision on the Memorial Drive overpass crossing Deerfoot Trail Northeast just after 8 a.m., this morning.

"At the time, a silver 2000 Chrysler Intrepid, operated by a 48-year-old man, entered the path of an eastbound CTrain operated by a 70-year-old man. The CTrain struck the front passenger side of the Chrysler and pushed it along the tracks."

The driver-side of the Chrysler impacted a support beam which caused significant damage to the vehicle.

"The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital where he was declared deceased. The operator of the CTrain was uninjured and police said that speed or impairment are not considered to be factors in this collision."

The collision shut down the Southbound Deerfoot Trail ramp at Memorial Trail Drive Northeast for several hours. Roads have since been reopened.

Anyone with information about this incident, or dashcam footage from the area at the time of the collision, is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
