Airdrie Facebook groups were swarmed with concerned parents last night, worried after seeing some concerning tweets threatening violence at Calgary area schools.

However, Calgary Police say there is no credible threat.

“There is no credible threat to any Calgary area schools [Friday]. We believe this incident was a hoax designed to fuel fear within our community while spoofing the identity of an unsuspecting Calgarian,” Police said via Twitter.

Police say this was a swatting incident. That’s where someone reports fictitious serious incidents in order to get the police to attend a particular address.

The tweets at the centre of the incident threatened violence against schools and contained images of various weapons.

Investigators from the Calgary Police Cybercrime team said the account was not local and was not located in Canada.

“As always, our School Resource Officers will be in place to ensure the safety of students and staff across the city,” Police said in another tweet.
