If you happen to get pulled over by police or RCMP you’re expected to be able to provide your registration and proof of insurance.

With new rules introduced today (Monday, August 12) you’ll no longer have to provide the physical pink slip.

Instead, the province is allowing insurance companies to issue digital copies of insurance documents to drivers.

It’s a move supported by the industry. Celyeste Power, vice-president Western, Insurance Bureau of Canada, says it’s something they’ve been advocating for years.

“We are pleased to welcome it because we can finally start to meet the needs and demands of our consumers,” Power explained. “Over 70 per cent of Albertans feel that insurance should offer more innovation and choice on how they should receive their documents.”

Rob Jesso, with the AMA Insurance company, says the changes are all about meeting the needs of customers and bringing insurance into the modern age.

“We believe insurance should be simple and understandable and we also believe insurance should be modern and innovative,” said Jesso. “There’s [no] reason why consumers shouldn’t have the same many modern conveniences with their insurance, as they do with so many of the other products that they buy.”

Drivers will be allowed to choose whether they want a digital copy of their insurance or the physical pink slip.

This is just the latest in the United Conservative Party government’s agenda to reduce red tape in Alberta. The move follows similar changes in Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

To date, the province stated more than 2,400 submissions have been received on the red tape reduction website.
