Airdrie RCMP will be on the lookout for impaired drivers on Canada Day.

While celebrations in the city are expected to be muted due to COVID-19, Mounties are still expecting to see people taking advantage of a day off to celebrate Canada’s 153 birthday.

Several people are expected to have taken the week or the last half of the week off and those planning to travel are being advised to use caution.

“Last Canada Day weekend between June 28th and July 1st, there were four reported fatalities due to motor vehicle collisions in the Alberta RCMP jurisdictions,” said Corporal Tammy Keibel in Airdrie.

Impaired driving will be one of the focuses of RCMP over the summer months.

“It’s a great occasion for [Airdronians] to hit the road and enjoy the summer weather and we just like to remind them that driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is never okay, it is both criminal and dangerous.”

In Airdrie, 83 drivers were charged with impaired driving related to alcohol in 2019. Three other drivers faced charges of driving while impaired by drugs. Airdrie officers also issued ten 24-hour suspensions last year.
