A regular meeting of the Rocky View County Council on Tuesday, January 24, saw two new policies put into action.

The first is the Locomotive Whistle Cessation Policy which is designed to bring about the elimination of locomotive whistling at all road crossings in the County.

With the new policy in place, local government will now be able to stop locomotive whistling when petitioned by residents.

The second policy outlines the order of priority for Flood Response as well as the criteria and budgeting process for drainage concerns as reported by landowners and businesses.

Rocky View County Reeve, Rolly Ashdown, says "It is the County's responsibility to respond to flood concerns, and our first priority in a flood event is to ensure the health and safety of our citizens."

Any flood related concerns will be pre-screened to determine the order of priority. The criteria are as follows:

  1. Public Health and Safety
  2. Impact to County Infrastructure
  3. Damage to private property resulting from County property
  4. Loss of Business
  5. Damage to private property not from County property

Ashdown says residents should take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of flooding. This means clearing debris from gutters and downspouts, as well as ensuring the ground slopes away from any building foundations.
