Rocky View Schools (RVS) could see a surplus by the end of this school year.

At the latest RVS Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees heard a presentation on how expenditures are trending lower than anticipated at the beginning of the school year for several areas.

By the end of February 2024, expenditures for teacher leave costs, salaries and benefits for teachers and support staff, as well as services and supplies, are slightly below the projected figures.

RVS may experience a surplus of $550,000 by year-end instead of the initially budgeted draw of $1.9 million from reserves as anticipated in the spring budget.

According to RVS, they are anticipating total revenues of $316.2 million by August 31, 2024, an increase from the $315.2 million expected earlier this year.

Also at the latest board meeting, trustees heard the results of the public feedback portion of balancing Airdrie student spaces.

According to the presentation, they had a total of 1,316 people complete online surveys, around 450 open house attendees and 11,600 visited their website RVSEngage to learn about the possible changes.

According to statistics provided by RVS, 37 per cent agree or strongly agree with converting C.W. Perry School to a high school. 67 per cent agree or strongly agree with grade eight students staying in middle school for grade nine and 63 per cent agree or strongly agree with re-organizing grade structure for all schools.

The trustees will make a final decision on April 25 for implementation mostly starting in the fall of 2025.

Trustees also heard an update on funding profiles from the province. Overall, student funding will be increased by 2.7 per cent for the next school year. RVS school division is projecting an increase of 2.6 per cent in student enrollment next school year.
