At the latest Rocky View Schools (RVS) board meeting on Thursday, an update was provided on how inclusion practices are key to creating a safe learning environment for all students.

According to RVS, the efforts of teachers, administrators, and the RVS Board are the fundamental beliefs in the right for every student to experience a sense of belonging and acceptance. This principle of inclusion is a cornerstone in various guiding documents that shape the division's work, including Alberta's Education Act.

RVS' Strategic Plan 2023 – 2026 outlines specific metrics to gauge the division's success in fostering an inclusive learning environment. Data is monitored and reported to identify trends and formulate effective implementation strategies across RVS schools.

The Learning Department is enhancing expertise and cultivating leadership skills among RVS staff through a diverse range of programs and learning sessions.

All RVS schools are actively incorporating the Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. They are instructing expected behaviours and have a framework in place to address more serious behavioural issues.

Stepping Stones to Mental Health, a collaborative initiative by Alberta Health Services and RVS, offers students, parents, and teachers access to success coaches, addiction counsellors, a culture coach, and other mental health professionals. The program also includes regular class sessions on wellness topics, one-on-one sessions, and information sharing.

The conclusion of the Mental Health in Schools pilot project grant in June will impact the capacity to offer the full range of these programs.

Just recently, it was announced Airdrie will be receiving new schools within the 2024 provincial budget.

Airdrie will see full construction funding for two new K-8 schools within the Rocky View School Division (RVS), as well as design funding for a new grade 9-12 school from the 2024 provincial budget. The funding of construction for the K-8 schools will be located in South Windsong and Bayview., while the design funding is meant for a school to be located in Southwinds.
