At the latest Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board Meeting (September 21), the student increase in schools was addressed once again by the RVS Board.

Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere continue to experience significant population growth year-over-year.

As of September 20, the number of students in the division is 28,586, an increase of 974 students or 3.5 per cent from last school year.

"That's about 100 less than projected, I would say it's not going to be a drastically different number when we get to the end of September," stated Greg Luterbach, Superintendent of RVS.

Luterbach shared some community-based statistics comparing student enrollment this time this year, to this time last year:

  • Airdrie - Around 500 students increase.
  • Chestermere, Langdon, Indus area - Around 130 students increase.
  • Cochrane, Westbrook, Bearspaw - Around 300 students increase.
  • Springbank and Bragg Creek are around the same.
  • Crossfield - Around 20 students increase.
  • Kathyrn, Beiseker - Around 10 students increase.
  • Elementary Discovery Trails - Around 15 students decrease.
  • High School Discovery Trails - Around 35 students increase.

"We've already asked schools if you haven't seen the student by now to remove them."

At the end of September, final enrollment figures will be prepared and reported to Alberta Education.
