Rocky View Schools (RVS) gave an update on what they are currently advocating for at their latest board meeting (October 5) and it's all about new schools.

Many of RVS's schools are still overcrowded, particularly in Airdrie, Cochrane, and Chestermere. Numerous schools in these communities are overcrowded as a result of rising enrollment and not having the school space needed.

To draw attention to these challenges and lobby the provincial government for the urgently required new schools mentioned in the division's capital plan, a year-long advocacy strategy was initiated in 2022–2023.

Here are the top 10 priorities for RVS:

  1. Airdrie K-8 school
  2. Airdrie High school
  3. Cochrane K-8 school
  4. Chestermere K-9 school
  5. Airdrie K-8 school
  6. Springbank K-8 school
  7. Cochrane High School
  8. Airdrie K-8 school
  9. Cochrane K-8 school
  10. Crossfield K-8 school

In order to secure full construction funding for the four schools that received planning and design funding in 2022–2023 and the three additional schools required in Airdrie, Springbank, and Cochrane in Budget 2024, the Board and RVS' Communications department will continue to implement strategies to raise awareness of RVS' critical need for additional schools in 2023–2024.

According to RVS, in these efforts, securing numerous additional modular classrooms as temporary spaces will also take the main stage.

The Canadian Association of Communicators in Education (CACE) has recognized RVS' 2022–23 Space for Students Advocacy Plan with a BRAVO! Award. The prize, which honours outstanding work in the fields of engagement, marketing, public relations, and communications, is given out during the annual CACE conference in Montreal at the end of October.
