The Kalix Legacy Foundation has created a scholarship in the name of Kalix Langenau called the " Kalix Langenau Memorial Scholarship".

One student from W.H. Croxford, where Langenau graduated in 2018 could receive $500 to help them in the academic journey to help offset costs for post-secondary.

The Kalix Legacy Foundation was established in Kalix Langenau's memory, whose life was tragically lost in 2020. The goal of the foundation is to carry out his dream of assisting low-income families with program and equipment costs so that every child has the same opportunity to take part in all sports programs available right here in Airdrie.

Betina Fillion, the stepmom of Langenau, the treasurer and secretary of the foundation talked about why they created this scholarship.

"One thing we wanted to do in remembering Kalix was to create this scholarship. We wanted to remember and mark his milestone of graduating from Croxford in 2018. We also wanted to recognize some of the teachers who were really integral in pushing him and getting him to that point."

Fillion stated with the foundation now in full swing of things, this was the right time to start the scholarship and hopefully expand it in the future.

"We have enough funds for not only this year but a couple of years for Croxford at this point."

Eventually, the foundation hopes they can expand the scholarship to the two other high schools in Airdrie, George McDougall and Bert Church.

The foundation is taking donations to help fund the scholarship for years to come, there are cash boxes at East Side Sports and Explosive Edge. The foundation is also selling firewood, $15 per bundle with $5 going towards the scholarship fund.

"We hope the funds benefit the students with anything they need post-secondary. Whether that's books, tuition, parking, whatever it looks like to create a little bit of financial ease with their experience next year at school," stated Brittany Whatley, the vice chair of the foundation.

The second annual Kalix Legacy Foundation Charity Classic is coming up on June 21 and 22. Some of the celebrities that are taking part in the celebrity hockey game include Jake Neighbours, Morris Lukowich, Darcy Campbell, Mike Cvik, Member of Parliament Blake Richards and Braden Lamb.
