When Didsbury RCMP was attending a compliance check for a 37-year-old man who was previously charged with the sexual assault of a female youth, they became involved in a separate drug trafficking investigation.

According to police, Aaron Saville, who was released on conditions by the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan after his sexual assault charge was subject to a compliance check by police.

"On April 22 Didsbury RCMP officers attended a local hotel to complete a court release order compliance check on Aaron Saville. At this time, Saville was failing to comply with the conditions of his release order and was arrested," Mounties stated.

While effecting the arrest of Aaron Saville, officers entered into an unrelated investigation regarding individuals trafficking methamphetamine from another room at the same hotel. On April 23, at approximately 5:00 a.m., officers executed a search warrant at the hotel and arrested 35-year-old Cody Desjarlais, a resident of Edmonton and 43-year-old Michelle Schmidt, a resident of Red Deer.

"Desjarlais had an outstanding arrest warrant from Mayerthorpe.  Schmidt had an outstanding arrest warrant from Edmonton and five  outstanding arrest warrants from Red Deer."

Police found approximately 20 grams of what is believed to be methamphetamine inside the hotel room.

Schmidt was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and was remanded into custody.  The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.  Schmidt’s next court appearance is May 1.

A Judicial Interim Release Hearing was conducted on April 23 and Saville was released on condition to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Didsbury on May 15.
