The wildfire situation in northern Alberta is getting worse as we approach the end of May and so is the air quality in the rest of the province.

Smoke from the fires that are burning out of control near High Level prompted a special air quality statement to be issued for Airdrie and several other areas of the province this afternoon.

Environment Canada says the smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility in some areas. At 3:00 pm this afternoon, the area of smoke extends from northwestern Alberta through Whitecourt then towards Hanna and is slumping southwards.

At 3:00 pm the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for the area was only rated at a three or low risk.  Later tonight it's forecast to move into the lower end of the high-risk range at a seven rating.  Tomorrow the rating is forecast at a five or moderate risk.

Young children, seniors and those with respiratory or heart conditions are advised to stay indoors once the rating reaches four or higher.

The smoky conditions have also prompted the RCMP in Alberta to remind motorists to turn your headlights on to maximize your visibility.
